Fenix Tk40 Review

I really hate to venture anywhere near the country exaggeration when undergoing a product – especially for an audience demanding and discerning as law enforcement officers. But when you run across a tool as powerful as the Fenix Tk40 it is almost impossible to avoid seeming cliché descriptions of their abilities. So when my colleagues jokingly began to refer to this flashlight as a “day maker” or “zombie killer,” I felt I could shamelessly pass along their informal evaluations of this incredibly powerful light.

I been just over three weeks ago, and a bar light on guard in three, 40 + hour trips on the afternoon (1300 hours to 2300 hours). It served as my primary source of lighting for citizen contacts, traffic stops and calls for service after sunset. I carried TK40 in the D-ring on my duty belt – one team for my full size Maglight. During the same period, I also carried TK40 two search warrants as a member of my department’s SWAT Team. In a SWAT capacity, toted my light on my person and exploited it for contraband searches and to cut through the smoke of flash-bang in the first entry.

The TK40 offers a maximum 630 lumens generated by an LED bulb. Frankly, the lighting quality of this flashlight nothing less than incredible. In Turbo mode, torch cutting through the darkness with a brilliant white light that reach distances well beyond any other flashlight I’ve ever worked with. I was able to shed light on the far parts of a fenced backyard with a flashlight and effectively clear the entire visible part of the yard from a position. At traffic stops, sinks TK40 inside of the car with light, increasing both safety and your ability to detect smuggled goods. Porter Tk40 is akin to bringing your cruiser spotlight up to the driver’s window with you.

In Turbo mode, and offers Tk40 about two hours of continuous operation before the batteries drain. The bad news is that the light is powered by eight AA batteries and do not have a charging function. The good news is that the light also offers three additional light settings to increase battery life: low (150 hours @ 13 lumens), mid (20 hours at 93 lumens) and high (6.8 hours @ 277 lumens). Switching between modes is a bit cumbersome at first, but knowledge is developing rapidly with use. Obviously a set of quality rechargeable AA batteries will be a solid investment for this light.
